Creative Synthesis
Through the use of new media and my teacher research, I learned how to improve my instruction and teach my students how to become more successful as readers as well as become global learners.
Instruction and Use of New Media
In New Literacies and Media, I created an iMovie with a partner using Flip Cameras. We wanted to know if using Flip Cameras would help student's to reflect on their writing pieces and encourage them to make improvements. We found that simply by using a new media, students were engaged and excited to use the tool to talk about their writing and made more thoughtful revisions to their pieces.
Additionally, I created a WebQuest on the life cycle of butterflies as an inquiry project for my second graders in Reading in the Content Areas.

Later in my coursework, I created another iMovie with a partner to teach parents about early reading literacy assessments.
Researching Effective Practices
Through my research in both Teachers as Researchers and Theory and Research in Literacy, I discovered the purpose behind teacher research, how to effectively research a topic and gained a better understanding of different literacy theories.

Global Teaching
Through my research on different educational systems, our course readings and the creation of my own personal philosophy on global learning, I learned that global teaching is much more than just being culturally aware and understanding of differences. Global teaching is providing our students with the social, cultural, technological and educational tools to be literate and successful anywhere around the globe.

Leadership
Through mentoring a first year teacher, being the grade level chair of my team and creating and leading a professional development workshop on 21st Century skills I was able to implement the teacher leadership qualities I have learned from our Teachers as Leaders course.
